How do you fancy being the next internet millionaire? Fancy owning your own social networking site and it might just happen, well maybe anyway.

Almost everyone with an internet connection has heard of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and all the other social networking sites out there, but would you like to open your own website and do the same? Especially as a lot of social networking software is free or open source.

The software that runs these sites is amazingly simple considering the sheer numbers of users it has to deal with and the volume of messages. Facebook grew by over one hundred percent last year, not bad for a business in the middle of a global recession. If you think that is impressive then know also that Twitter grew by over nine hundred percent in a similar period. Yes folks, 900%, other sources say growth was in excess of 1,300%!

Facebook is estimated to have over 400 million users and that number still seems to be growing daily. Twitter is clearly another internet phenomenon and is estimated to have 55 million monthly visits. Although still relatively small by Facebook standards, due to exceptional growth it has to be asked how long this situation will remain.

With user numbers and growth figures like these networking sites look good to be a continuing phenomenon on the stock markets for a while yet. The market is not yet saturated and maybe another application will be launched that will take the market from these two giants. Maybe it will merely be someone with a good idea for a new feature that neither has yet implemented.

I bet she is a little fed up now as he reputedly refused to sell Facebook for two billion dollars. His net worth now must be more than many small countries. If a drunken student can come up with an idea that is now worth in excess two billion USD then surely there is hope for us all.
