OVERSHOES - Basic Information
Some people think the overshoes belong to a bygone era. They think that overshoes are an unnecessary complication and unnecessary to protect modern footwear. They think the waterproof overshoes are a technology beloved only by the elderly. The idea of wearing rubber overshoes strikes them as some kind of fashion abomination to be avoided at all costs. Well, they are wrong.
Cycling Overshoes
I first came across the concept of waterproof overshoes when a friend of mine became serious about cycling. I called over to see him one day just as he was on his way out. The weather that day was pretty grim, but he seemed undeterred by this. We talked for a short while on his front porch and while we talked he put on his wet weather gear. This was the first time I had ever seen overshoes. I asked him about them and he explained that cycling with wet feet really is no fun and that cycling overshoes kept his feet warm and dry while riding through puddles. As I only had a casual interest in cycling at the time I mentally filed the information as useful, but unlikely to play a large role in my life.
Protecting Expensive Fashion Footwear with Overshoes
Of course, in later life this information has become more relevant. With a pair of fashion shoes costing several hundred dollars a pair the idea of having them damaged by water just isn't an option. At least it isn't an option when a waterproof overshoe casts a small fraction of the price. Nor is it a fashion crime to wear overshoes when some of them look quite stylish. It is certainly better to have dry, warm feet and undamaged footwear than it is to walk through snow and road salt and have to pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege.
Overshoes for Business
Guys might think that somehow overshoes aren't going to help them but this is far from the truth too. Do you really think it is acceptable to wear a business suit and a pair of snowmobile boots? Would you look any better in a pair of hiking boots with a business suit? A pair of rubber overshoes can take literally three seconds to put on an even less time to take off. If you don't like the idea of rubber overshoes though how about a breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex? There are plenty of macho looking options available. At the very least using a pair of overshoes shows your good sense in dressing appropriately for the weather and will ensure that your feet are warm and dry while your competitors in the office sit with cold, wet feet and a puddle of dirty water under their desk.
Women understand this immediately and are usually impressed by a guy showing some brains.
Overshoes for Work and Play - Final Thoughts
Overshoes made from modern materials can be extremely hard wearing and last several years. There are unfortunately some manufacturers and models that are not worth the time or investment that they would require to purchase. I would advise anyone to search the Internet for some reviews of any product they intend to purchase.
Rubber overshoes may cause your feet sweat in indoor environment but are priceless for any outdoor activity, especially if it is particularly cold. Gore-Tex or other breathable, waterproof fabrics are lighter weight and reduce the problem of perspiration and odour. They are however not quite as warm and your choice must reflect the type of weather you expect to experience and use them in. It is generally better, if in doubt, to buy a size larger than you would otherwise require as some overshoe fittings are quite tight.
A decent pair of quality waterproof overshoes will keep your feet warm and dry, protect your footwear, advertise your good sense and look good into the bargain.
